Between the Living and the Archive considers the imprint of knowledge(s) upon our bodies. Contributing to our individualised ways of knowing and forged from varying pathways of transmission, what does it mean to acknowledge their traces in our lives? In their shaping of our realities, how do their echoes inform our lived experiences?Living in our bodies, they circulate quietly. Often, they manifest through practice, acknowledgement and mediation. If applied appropriately, it can teach a generation. Other times, they live in suppression, irrelevance or neglect. Like a shadow, they bind onto us.From the excavation of stories, memories, remedies, techniques, intuition and beliefs, the site presents a diverse interpretation of these knowledge(s). Between the Living and the Archive is an exercise to make space for these manifestations of knowledge(s) that live beyond mainstream pedagogical systems. Whether learnt, inherited or experienced, each artistic presentation demonstrates the physical translation of these knowledge(s) into materiality. The site invites us to contemplate our lived experiences built from these bodily methods of integration.

Growing
a Pair

Growing a Pair presents a delicate arrangement of metal sculptures placed in tension with other objects.
The installation interprets the saying “to grow a pair”, which denotes a masculine undertone of being strong, confident, acting courageously, especially after failing to do something. In this work, Aki articulates an embodiment that is nonbinary, consensual, and not defined by a biological or physical condition.
Growing a Pair illustrates an intimate view of the physical and psychical dissonance, where invisible translations of bodily experience outgrow the human form.

The Asli and Bunian
of Tangkak
The Asli and Bunian of Tangkak is an immersive installation simulating a conversation about the worlds in our Southeast Asian region. Centring on stories from the people of Tangkak, the installation encapsulates an intriguing world that often escapes our sight.
The Asli and Bunian of Tangkak draw inspiration from the quiet alliance between the Orang Asli (Indigenous peoples of Malaysia) and Orang Bunian (whistling or hidden people). The Asli believes the Bunian to be guardians of the forest, keeping the balance of the habitats they share. While the Bunian is a myth community existing in an abstracted dimension mirroring ours, the Asli, faces ongoing displacement from their lands.
Unpacking the legends related to the Gunung of Ledang, and the different variations of stories told by its people, The Asli and Bunian of Tangkak emphasises myth-making as a creative fortification tool by Indigenous people to protect their lands.

Hanya Tinggal Kenangan

Hanya Tinggal Kenangan (Only Memories Remain) visualises an excavation of contemporary culture in our fast-paced present. The installation delves into the impending revamp of Bugis Village Shopping Street. For many growing up in Singapore during the 2000s, the shopping street was a place of youthful experimentations, contributing to a testament of younger self/selves that once existed. Confined in these translucent boxes are a wide array of objects from the site.
While they may seem commonplace, their value for preservation is in the memories they symbolise. In this act of gathering them all together, Hanya Tinggal Kenangan is an ongoing work that maps out physical erasures while negotiating ways of remembering their narratives.
